Using a single needle, ink is pricked into the skin dot by dot, manually without electricity. Without a machine, there is no noise and it is agreeably a less painful experience. Yes, it is slow and can take longer than a machine, but the practice is more intentional, and is a spiritual and ancient method of body art. The overall experience can be peaceful and much more of a gentler approach.

Machine tattoos are just as much of an art form as hand poke, and can be more efficient for larger and more detailed designs. Hand poke tattoos are very distinctive in their look and many styles can be achieved. It is often agreed that hand poke looks more natural, organic and therefore unique. This method is simple and less invasive, which also allows the skin to heal quickly.

Maddy was drawn to this traditional method of tattooing because of the gentle experience she had when receiving herself. It reminds us to slow down and the practice keeps the artist and client present with every poke made. Through this practice, we are honouring our ancestors and creating intentional markings inspired by the flow of nature.
